Prayer Vigil in Bedford Square

On Friday evening I attended the prayer vigil outside the BPAS clinic in Bedford Square, organised by 40 Days for Life. It was a peaceful liturgy consisting mainly of the rosary and the stations of the cross. There were hundreds of Catholics present - many of them young and many of them women. The aim was to quietly and prayerfully witness to the sanctity of human life - the unborn who have no voice - and also to pray for the women who find themselves in difficult situations. Practical help is offered to those who decide to continue with their pregnancy. When such women become aware of the alternatives they often change their mind and babies are given the chance of a life.

I knew that a certain ammount of opposition to the vigils had been whipped up over the last few weeks. However gentle one is - and everyone I have met in the campaign has been utterly sensitive in their approach to this issue - simply voicing an opinion which goes against conventional thinking seems to stir up an enormous ammount of anger. As a result, the group who had gathered there to quietly pray, were subjected to the most appalling verbal abuse from an angry mob of pro-abortion activists. For most of the evening I couldn't hear a word that was being said, apart from being shouted at and told to keep my religion at home. Much of the chanting and shouting was deeply offensive and blasphemous. It got worse when anyone fell to their knees. Never in my life have I been screamed and yelled at for expressing my religious belief in public.

Interestingly enough, the crowd seemed to get exceptionally irate whenever the Passion of Our Lord was mentioned or Our Lady. The sight of Christians falling to their knees or crossing themeselves produced howls of ridicule.

Such behaviour seems completely irrational and for want of a better word rather un-British. We used to pride ourselves on being a tolerant nation, and yet certain views are now not just opposed but stiffled. Despite this I felt proud to be part of a group of people who quietly and faithfully got on with what they were there to do. The contrast between the silent Catholics and the jeering crowd was deeply poignant. It reminded me of what Jesus faced as he began that last journey through Holy Week. In a way it brought me closer to Him. It has certainly encouraged me to try and be more faithful as His follower.

Most of the people who attended the vigil felt genuinely sorry for the group on the opposite side. I'm sure many prayers have been offered for them. Friday evening was a vivid reminder of the spiritual battle we are now facing.

  1. Having been on various prayer vigils and recently witnessing 200 Catholics at a vigil organised at a Stratford clinic I have seen this situation escalate very quickly. The prochoice counter demonstration friday night really put Bedford Square on the map. This can only negatively affect the clinics business which is based on being hidden from veiw.Market economics dictate certain inevitable facts and one of them is a steady flow of consumers for a product.Hopefully BPAS will eventually have to move their facility and once on the move we'll keep them running.
There was a great atmosphere friday night and peices of paper were passed around quoting Matthew 5;43...
"You have heard that it was said, you shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you"
I saw one egg thrown at us, it missed everyone and skidded on the floor.Considering their was a pregnant women and children in our midst this shows the mindset of some of the people tagging along at pro choice demo's.

    Here's the fightback from BPAS...
Ann Furedi, chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, recently said "They should think really carefully about whether what they are doing is really Christian."

I agree Christians should think very carefully about this issue because it is an issue that confronts the whole culture of death in our society by being the foundation of the marketing of sexualisation for freemarket capitalism.Promiscuity is a resource that a war will be fought over just as viciously and as cleverly as the wars for natural resources on this earth.
Christians are inevitably going to be forced to take sides in this war as it develops as they have had to over other recent issues and hence why we are seeing the provisions of Anglicanorum coetibus being forfilled in Englands Catholic renewal.
I feel proud to be sponsering a confirmation candidate from the Anglican tradition into the Catholic Church this coming Saturday at the Easter vigil.

  4. We had a heavey police presence saturday as we were tailed and eventually confronted by pro-choicers.The police were fantastic and the few hardliner pro-choice organisers soon left when the police had dealt with them leaving their little band of unadept followers stranded in a situation they didn't know how to handle (being vastly outnumbered by pro-lifers singing hymns and saying Rosary). Our pavement councillor reported at the end that this little contingency eventually took leaflets on what we do and left too.She also reported a turnaround couple. The couple left the clinic without terminating and our councillor approached them and congratulated "Daddy" telling them to look after their new addition to which they agreed they would...albeit rather tearfully.
Saturdays outing was a very early start for me although a beautiful morning.St Thomas' Church is fantastic with a particularly eyecatching tabernacle in a Romanesque mosaic style and the turn around report topped the lot.

    Campaign Director
    40 Days for Life

The media is buzzing with coverage about 40 Days for
Life after it was discovered that a Planned Parenthood
affiliate is now conducting its own knock-off 40-day
    prayer campaign ...

... but instead of praying for life, Planned Parenthood
calls for 40 days of prayer ... for ABORTION.

Some say that imitation is the sincerest form of
flattery, but we're not flattered when America's largest
abortion chain "prays" for the destruction of innocent
children -- while raking in over $487 MILLION in tax
dollars each year to fund its deadly operation.

Here are just a few of Planned Parenthood's "prayer
    intentions":

    * Day 18: "Today we pray for all the staff at abortion
clinics around the nation. May they be daily
confirmed in the sacred care that they offer women."

    * Day 28: "Today we pray for the women who travel
hundreds of miles to get an abortion. May their
determination be rewarded with spiritual strength."

    * Day 34: "Today we give thanks for abortion escorts
who guide women safely through the hostile gauntlets
    of protesters."
